Orthopedic Dog Beds for Large Dogs

We cannot underestimate the difference a quality bed can make to the comfort of our dogs. An incredible fact is that one in five adult dogs has some degree of arthritis. I’m sharing my top 3 choices for orthopedic dog beds for large dogs, because the bigger breeds are more prone to suffer with joint pain and discomfort.

Firstly, one small piece of advice, as I don’t think there’s anything worse than being disappointed with a purchase. No-one knows your dog better than you and neither Amazon, another reviewer, nor me,  can guess what’s right for your dog. So in the first instance, please take care with the measurements of the dog bed you think your dog needs. These are all large beds, and signify a reasonable financial investment, but perhaps your dog needs an even larger one.

The best way to do this, is to either use a previous bed as an example, or if buying for the first time, pay attention to how your dog lies down. If you can, try and mark the space and then measure it to get a good idea of length and width.

Quality dog beds for maximum comfort

What makes a dog bed truly supportive?

As with many products on the market, just because something is labelled as orthopedic doesn’t make it so! There is one single thing you should always look out for, and this is a 4 inch think memory foam (or foam/gel combination) where the foam is 100% solid. It’s important to note there are other versions of foam comprised of mixed-grade, egg-crate structure, or layers glued together. Variable combinations such as those will not support your dog correctly, as they have little or no orthopedic benefit. However, there is one exception, if glued layers are therapeutic-grade foam.

You may also want to consider joint supplements for a dog who has an orthopedic condition. They can really help with joint pain, and as a result will work in conjunction with any benefits gained from an orthopedic bed.

PetFusion Bed Memory Foam Inner

This is a premium bed that has been designed with quality in mind. It was developed specifically to cater for dog owners who are fed up with dog beds having a short lifespan due to low-quality issues like tearing. A solid memory foam for orthopedic purposes makes up the interior.

With all of this in mind, it’s been constructed to be as comfortable as possible for dogs. Taking everything into account  it’s very good value for money.

A 4 inch (10cm) base made from memory foamSolid support for your dog’s joints, resulting in greater comfort for your dog. Because of this joint pain can be improved, as well as mobility. Dogs tend to sleep better on proper orthopedic beds too, so their overall health and energy can also be improved.
The bolsters are constructed from recycled materialsMore environmentally-friendly than some other beds on the market
Outer cover is made from a combination of polyester and cottonA durable finish that is slower to wear
Non-slip basePrevents accidental skidding, especially if your dog is boisterous when climbing on. Also helps to protect your flooring
Removable coverEasily taken off and machine washable, plus it’s really easy to spot clean and get rid of excess hair build up
Manufacturer guarantee

USA: There is a returns policy, meaning if your are not 100% satisfied you have 30 days to return the bed.

UK: There is a 1 year warranty from any manufacturing defect.

  • Caters specifically for large dogs, but can be used for multiple pets if you have several of the smaller variety! Takes around 100 pounds in total weight, and maybe a little more.
  • Has a large sleeping surface 28 inches in length x 22 inches wide (exclude arm bolsters – this is the flat surface)

Is there anything not so good?

On reflection there is nothing wrong with this dog bed, but I want to draw your attention to the fact this is a bed and lounger. Therefore, it does resemble a sofa and has bolsters that act as a head rest for your dog. In other words, if you want something for a large or very large dog to lie completely flat and stretched out, then please go for a flat bed without these arms.

Note: There is also an Extra-Large size available, that is 44 x 34 x 10 in (127 x 102 x 33 cm)

Size: 40 x 35 x 4 inches (Extra Large)

Heavy Duty Supportive Bed for Dogs

Firstly, there is one thing that stands out about buying this bed, which is you get an extra cover for free. This is great, as you have one to use while you wash and dry the other.

Moreover, this bed has the orthopedic standard 4 inches thick memory foam that gives excellent support for all dogs weighing up to 160 pounds.

Interesting fact: Memory foam tends to have greater resistance to dust mites, mildew, mold and bacteria, which is another great health benefit for your dog!

The outer fabric cover is where the “heavy duty” description comes in. There are actually two layers that make up the cover, an internal water resistant layer made from taffeta, and then a denim (jean-weight) outer layer. Both have zippers for ease of putting on and taking off.

However, you may ask what is so great about denim? It’s 100% cotton and therefore a natural fiber. There are some dogs that are allergic to synthetic fibers, so this could be an added bonus for some dog owners.

Free extra cover (with a micro-suede finish)A great substitute for when you are washing your main cover
Therapeutic memory foamThe 4 inch thick layer give optimal orthopedic support to your dog, helping with joint aches and pains, and giving the opportunity for sounder sleeping
Double layer outer coverA waterproof inner fits tightly to the mattress, and the outer denim layer gives a natural, but heavy duty contact surface
Additional covers available separatelyIf you find you need more, you can easily purchase just the covers

  • It’s completely flat for dogs that like to stretch out and sleep that way
  • Given the quality, it is excellent value-for-money for an orthopedic bed

Is there anything that’s not so good?

A few things you might want to bear in mind:

  • water resistant is not the same as water proof, and for dogs that have significant accidents this isn’t the bed for you.
  • this memory foam can have a chemical smell when first exposed to air, however this shouldn’t last any more than a week or so.

Size: Make sure you click on the Large Size option (also available in Extra Large)

GoPetClub Bed

Another great example of a top quality orthopedic dog bed, with the 4 inch memory foam thickness. Once again the foam is a solid inner, not mixed or layered as with some dog beds.

As an added benefit, it comes with a double layer of protection on the contact surface, with a water resistant layer closest to the mattress and a top layer of real suede. Both layers can easily be taken off for cleaning purposes.

Inside the GoPetClub Orthopedic Bed

It arrives in a rolled shape, but if you lay the bed out for a day (24 hours) the foam will expand and revert to the correct size and depth.

Two-layered coverDouble the protection for the important therapeutic foam inner, with a water resistant inner, and a soft-finish real suede outer
Non-slip undersideStops the bed sliding around, for when your dog is getting on/off
Zippered cover for easy accessA durable finish that is slower to wear
HypoallergenicSuede is a natural finish, so good for any dogs that experience allergies from man-made fibers

  • The cover is zippered on 3 sides, so it’s really easy to put on and take off

Is there anything not so good?

Slightly cheaper than the other beds I’ve reviewed here, and as a result I would say the finishing touches are not quite as good. For example, the zippers and stitching aren’t quite as robust.

Note: There is also an Extra-Large size available, that is 55 x 38 x 4 in (139.7 x 96.5 x 10.2 cm)

In conclusion, I hope all the features and benefits detailed have helped point out why a good orthopedic dog bed is so important, and particularly so for large breeds. Despite a good dog bed being a relatively high-cost item, I think it’s worth the investment. After all, we can’t really put a price on the comfort of our beloved dogs.

  1. Great information about what to look for when buying orthopaedic dog beds for large dogs, and especially about the type of foam that is best, but unfortunately none of your suggestions are able to be bought in Australia. Do you have any recommendations for Australian based customers? Thank you for sharing

    1. Hi Josie – yes, the PetFusion bed is available in Australia. I will look to see if there are others available and add to the page for the future. Thanks you for reaching out and asking the question, Mara.

  2. You know, everything in life us fascinating and interesting. Knowing that  animals and humans suffers as they grow older. Even though humans are higher animals. Awesome, I love the key features and benefits provided by these beds.

Another thing I liked most is the orthopedic support. That’s vital for a dog health as they old. Because when the kind of bed they sleep on is not good quality, it affects their bones. From my experience, dogs tend to weigh more as they grow old, and without good beds for them. All the weight is applied on their bones and this reduces their life expectancy. Thank you for this great article

If you tell me what country you are from I will try and help too. Mara

  6. The 3. GO PET CLUB ORTHOPEDIC PET BED seems like the best one out of all of them, in my opinion. I like the fact that it’s easy to take the cover off. I’ve had dog beds that were a pain when it came to taking covers off because they only had a zipper on one side.

  7. My guy is 11 years old now and has a need of better orthopedic support. Your reviews were very helpful in detailing the positive points of each of the three beds reviewed. I also found it very helpful that you define what makes a good orthopedic bed in terms of the actual mattress material. My pup likes to sleep with his head elevated at times so it appears the Perfusion bed and lounger will be great bed for him. Thanks!

  8. Hello there. Nowadays a dog’s life is good because there are so many tools and things to keep furry friends in good shape.

These beds sound a comforting place to rest for every type of dog.

I like the idea that in these beds you can fit more little dogs and not just a big one.

Dogs are part of family. We want them to have the best because they give us unconditional love.

These beds could give them agood place to rest or sleep. Their health would be better. When dogs are happy, we are happy too.

    All the best, Nemira.

    1. Hello Nemira,

  9. You know, this is really great information on how to purchase a dog bed. I never thought to measure the length of my dog as he lays! This makes total sense. When I bought my last one, I just kind of looked at them, and pictured my dogs in the bed, in my mind. Thinking, whether they would fit or not. I LOVE the pet fusion bed! I loved it even more seeing two dogs laying in it. I have two small dogs, but they are very close and lay together. So this type of bed would be wonderful for them.

    1. Hi there,

I’m so glad you liked my reviews. I like seeing two dogs on the PetFusion bed too! Hopefully this will help you with any future dog bed purchases. Best wishes to you and your doggie family, Mara :

  10. Hi Mara, excellent article, thank you! I really appreciated how thorough your reviews were of each orthopedic bed. Our beloved Major, a labrador cross boer bull had hip displacement & suffered greatly in his life, especially towards the end when his usually loving demeanour turned grouchy & he even snapped at us, when the pain became unbearable. I wish I had known of these beds then, perhaps they could have alleviated some of his pain.
Will keep them in mind for when we get another best friend.

    1. Hi Lauren,

Thanks for sharing your experiences with Major – our German Shepherd also got a bit grouchier in his old age, not helped by long term pain from hip dysplasia either! Thanks for keeping these in mind for the future.

      All the best, Mara.

  11. Hi Mara, great post! I’ve never saw this kind of beds for dogs for sale in my country! I think it is amazing, because when dogs get older they are just like people, and have sleep problems. An orthopedic dog bed could be the solution to prevent some older dog pains!

I love dogs but I can’t have a dog at the moment. All my friends have 1 or 2 dogs. So I will recommend your website to them. The beds look fantastic and comfortable.

    Thanks for this great idea.

    1. Hi Alex,

I’m glad you enjoyed this post and thank you for recommending my site to your dog-owner friends. I appreciate you sharing the information.

      Have a great day, Mara.
