Orthopedic Dog Beds for Large Dogs

Just one small piece of advice, as I don’t think there’s anything worse than being disappointed with a purchase. No-one knows your dog better than you – not Amazon, not a reviewer, nor me! Please take care with the measurements of the dog bed you think your dog needs. These are all large beds, but maybe your dog needs more.

The best way to do this, is to either use a previous bed as an example, or if buying for the first time, pay attention to how your dog lies on the floor (or your bed!). if you can, try and mark the space and then measure it to get a good length and width.

Orthopedic dog beds for maximum comfort

What should you look for in an orthopedic dog bed?

As with many products on the market, just because something is labelled as orthopedic doesn’t make it so! There is one single thing you should always look out for – a 4 inch think memory foam (or foam/gel combination) where the foam is 100% solid. there are other versions of foam comprised of mixed-grade, egg-crate structure, or layers glued together. (Only exception is if the layers are therapeutic-grade foam.) These will not support your dog correctly and will have little or no orthopedic benefit as a result.

You may also want to consider joint supplements for a dog who has an orthopedic condition. They can really help with joint pain.

PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed and Lounger 2

PetFusion Bed Memory Foam Inner

This is a premium bed that has been designed with quality in mind. It was developed specifically to cater for dog owners who are fed up with dog beds with a short lifespan due to low-quality issues like tearing. It also has a solid memory foam interior for orthopedic purposes.

It’s also been developed to be as comfortable as possible for dogs, so with this in mind it is quite good value for money.

Features Benefits
A 4 inch (10cm) base made from memory foam Solid support for your dog’s joints, resulting in greater comfort for your dog. Because of this joint pain can be improved, as well as mobility. Because they tend to sleep better on proper orthopedic beds, overall health and energy can also be better for your dog.
The bolsters are constructed from recycled materials More environmentally-friendly than some other beds on the market
The outer cover is made from a combination of polyester and cotton A durable finish that is slower to wear
Non-slip base Prevents accidental skidding, especially if your dog is boisterous when climbing on. Also helps to protect your flooring
Removable cover Easily taken off and machine washable, plus it’s really easy to spot clean and get rid of excess hair build up
Manufacturer guarantee USA: There is a return policy, meaning if your are not 100% satisfied you have 30 days to return the bed

UK: There is a 1 year warranty from any manufacturing defect

  • It’s specially sized for large dogs, but can be used for multiple pets if you have several of the smaller variety! It can sleep up to around 100 pounds (maybe slightly more)
  • A large sleeping surface 28 inches in length x 22 inches wide (exclude arm bolsters – this is the flat surface)

Is there anything not so good?

In all honesty, not really. However, I want to draw your attention to the fact this is a bed and lounger – so it does resemble a sofa. It’s been designed so the arms are a head rest for your dog, so if you want something that a large or very large dog can lie completely flat (without leaning on the head rest) and stretched out, then please go for a flat bed.

Note: There is also an Extra-Large size available, that is 44 x 34 x 10 in (127 x 102 x 33 cm)

 Dog Bed Bonus cover offer

Firstly, there is one thing that stands out about buying this bed – you get an extra cover for free. This is great, as you have one to use while you wash and dry the other.

Has the orthopedic standard 4 inches thick memory foam that gives excellent support for all dogs weighing up to 160 pounds.

Heavy-Duty Orthopedic Dog Bed

Interesting fact: Memory foam tends to have greater resistance to dust mites, mildew, mold and bacteria – another great health benefit for your dog!

The outer fabric cover is where the “heavy duty” description comes in. There are actually two layers that make up the cover – an internal water resistant layer made from taffeta, and then a denim (jean-weight) outer layer. Both have zippers for ease of putting on and taking off.

What is so great about denim, you may ask? Well, it’s 100% cotton and therefore a natural fiber. There are some dogs that are allergic to synthetic fibers, so this could be an added bonus for some dog owners.

Features Benefits
Free extra cover (with a micro-suede finish) A great substitute for when you are washing your main cover
Therapeutic memory foam The 4 inch thick layer give optimal orthopedic support to your dog, helping with joint aches and pains, and giving the opportunity for sounder sleeping
Double layer outer cover A waterproof inner fits tightly to the mattress, and the outer denim layer gives a natural, but heavy duty contact surface
Additional covers available separately If you find you need more, you can easily purchase just the covers

  • It’s completely flat for dogs that like to stretch out and sleep that way
  • Given the quality, it is excellent value-for-money for an orthopedic bed

Is there anything that’s not so good?

A few things you might want to bear in mind:

  • water resistant is not the same as water proof, and for dogs that have significant accidents this isn’t the bed for you
  • this memory foam can have a chemical smell when first exposed to air, but this shouldn’t last any more than a week or so

GoPetClub Orthopedic Dog Bed 2

Another great orthopedic dog bed, with the 4 inch memory foam thickness. Once again the foam is a solid inner, not mixed or layered as with some dog beds.

Comes with a double layer of protection on the contact surface, with a water resistant layer closest to the mattress and a top layer of real suede. Both layers can easily be taken off for cleaning purposes.

Inside the GoPetClub Orthopedic Dog Bed

Arrives in a rolled shape, but if you lay the bed out for a day (24 hours) the foam will revert to the correct size and depth.

Features Benefits
Two-layered cover Double the protection for the important therapeutic foam inner – water resistant inner, and a soft-finish real suede outer
Non-slip underside Stops the bed sliding around, for when your dog is getting on/off
Zippered cover for easy access A durable finish that is slower to wear
Hypoallergenic Suede is a natural finish, so good for any dogs that experience allergies from man-made fibers

  • The cover is zippered on 3 sides, so it’s really easy to put on and take off

Is there anything not so good?

Slightly cheaper than the other beds I’ve reviewed here, and as a result I would say the finishing touches are not quite as good. For example, the zippers and stitching and quite as robust.

Note: There is also an Extra-Large size available, that is 55 x 38 x 4 in (139.7 x 96.5 x 10.2 cm)

I hope you have enjoyed seeing these great orthopedic beds for dogs. They are definitely my top three picks after researching almost all of the ones I could find available online.

  1. My guy is 11 years old now and has a need of better orthopedic support. Your reviews were very helpful in detailing the positive points of each of the three beds reviewed. I also found it very helpful that you define what makes a good orthopedic bed in terms of the actual mattress material. My pup likes to sleep with his head elevated at times so it appears the Perfusion bed and lounger will be great bed for him. Thanks!

    1. Hi Robert and thanks for leaving a comment here. For sure our canine friends may need a little more comfort and support as they get older, so I’m glad you think the Petfusion bed is a good option. Mara

  2. Hello there. Nowadays a dog’s life is good because there are so many tools and things to keep furry friends in good shape.

These beds sound a comforting place to rest for every type of dog.

I like the idea that in these beds you can fit more little dogs and not just a big one.

Dogs are part of family. We want them to have the best because they give us unconditional love.

These beds could give them agood place to rest or sleep. Their health would be better. When dogs are happy, we are happy too.

    All the best, Nemira.

    1. Hello Nemira,

Thank you for visiting my site and sharing your feedback with me. I agree that we want the best for our dogs, and that they are part of the family. I hope you fine lots of useful information here, Mara.

  3. You know, this is really great information on how to purchase a dog bed. I never thought to measure the length of my dog as he lays! This makes total sense. When I bought my last one, I just kind of looked at them, and pictured my dogs in the bed, in my mind. Thinking, whether they would fit or not. I LOVE the pet fusion bed! I loved it even more seeing two dogs laying in it. I have two small dogs, but they are very close and lay together. So this type of bed would be wonderful for them.

    1. Hi there,

I’m so glad you liked my reviews. I like seeing two dogs on the PetFusion bed too! Hopefully this will help you with any future dog bed purchases. Best wishes to you and your doggie family, Mara :

  4. Hi Mara, excellent article, thank you! I really appreciated how thorough your reviews were of each orthopedic bed. Our beloved Major, a labrador cross boer bull had hip displacement & suffered greatly in his life, especially towards the end when his usually loving demeanour turned grouchy & he even snapped at us, when the pain became unbearable. I wish I had known of these beds then, perhaps they could have alleviated some of his pain.
Will keep them in mind for when we get another best friend.

    1. Hi Lauren,

Thanks for sharing your experiences with Major – our German Shepherd also got a bit grouchier in his old age, not helped by long term pain from hip dysplasia either! Thanks for keeping these in mind for the future.

      All the best, Mara.

  5. Hi Mara, great post! I’ve never saw this kind of beds for dogs for sale in my country! I think it is amazing, because when dogs get older they are just like people, and have sleep problems. An orthopedic dog bed could be the solution to prevent some older dog pains!

I love dogs but I can’t have a dog at the moment. All my friends have 1 or 2 dogs. So I will recommend your website to them. The beds look fantastic and comfortable.

    Thanks for this great idea.
