Memory Foam Dog Beds for Large Dogs

Memory foam is still a bit of a buzz word, even in the human world. Ranging from pillows, mattresses and shoes – it is so popular due to the high level of comfort and natural molding to our bodies. It’s no wonder that this somewhat magical substance is available in dog bedding as well.

If you have enjoyed what memory foam has to offer, you are sure to think your dog deserves the same high level of comfort!

Here are my top 3 picks in the world of memory foam dog beds for large dogs.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Brindle Dog Bed WarrantyA memory foam bed designed for long-lasting comfort and being easy to care for too. The outer fabric is soft to the touch, but is also durable for long-lasting life.

One of the key design features of this dog bed is the shredded foam, which gives good air flow within the structure of the bed and allows it to “breathe”.

Despite the shredded foam interior, the bed doesn’t clump into awkward shapes, due to extra stitching that holds everything in place.

KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS:

Features Benefits
A 3 year limited warranty Extra reassurance for you that Brindle will stand behind their design and you will get a quality product, designed to last
Breathable shredded memory foam A soft and comfortable sleeping experience for your dog
Very easy care The cover is machine washable and can be tumble dried on a low setting. Simply unzip, wash and go!

WHAT ELSE IS GOOD ABOUT IT?

  • It does come in different sizes, so you can select the perfect fit for your own dog.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT’S NOT SO GOOD?

  • One word of warning, if you have a puppy or dog with incontinence issues and they have an “accident”, you cannot machine wash the internal foam – this will void the warranty on the product, as well as probably wreck it. If this sounds like a possibility for you, then I would advise buying a simple waterproof sheet, to place in-between the foam and the machine-washable outer cover.
  • Believe it or not, I am going to suggest a “human” product as the best for this purpose – it does the job, is waterproof and washable – and it is only a single layer, so won’t impact on the overall comfort of the memory foam bed.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT’S NOT SO GOOD?

  • I personally wouldn’t rate down any dog bed on this basis, as I would never expect a bed to be chew proof! However, some customers have given a lower rating because of this – Better World Pets do state in the product description that it is not suitable for heavy chewers.
  • They also state it’s not suitable for pups under 6 months old – which I agree with. Memory foam can sometimes be quite firm, and is probably not the best for young, soft bones that are still growing and developing.

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT’S NOT SO GOOD?

N.B. Not all manufacturers state this, but it’s a good idea with all memory foam beds!

  • They tend to need a “rest and relaxation” period before being used. By this I mean left for 24-48 hours. As you can imaging, these materials do have give in them and during packing and transit they tend to be flattened. Leaving them to lie flat for a day or two allows air to flow back into the foam and lets it expand to it’s full capacity and therefore maximum comfort for your dog.
  • Also, the foam can give off quite a “chemical” smell sometimes, so it’s a good idea to let this air off before use. Even better if you have room outside, or in a garage/shed, to let the inflation and airing off occur.
  • There seem to be quibbles about whether this bed is truly waterproof – the manufacturer advertises it as such, but some reviewers claim it’s not. My advice, save yourself the heartache, and just get a waterproof insert that sits just inside the cover, between it and the foam inner. For an extra $15-$20, if you have a dog that’s likely to have accidents, it just makes sense, for any dog bed. (Buy a waterproof liner here)

Hi Mara, After checking out these dog beds, I really like the first one, the Brindle soft memory foam, The price is right in the ballpark for my budget, and I won’t be having the problem of our dog wetting the bed. :).

I think for the price it should be a great dog bed, the benefits out way the one negative.

      Hi Kim,

Thank you for leaving your feedback – it’s great that there’s something there that you feel will work for you and your dog. I’m glad you mention the positives outweigh the one negative, as I do try and give a fair and balanced view to the products I review. I do research to find the best products, but it pays to highlight anything negative as well so no-one feels they are blinded into making a purchase that doesn’t suit. Let me know how you get on with it and all the best to you.
