Kong Dog Toys

I want to start off this page by getting something off my chest. KONG toys are fantastic and there are plenty of customer reviews, all over different sites to that effect. However, like ANY other dog toy made of plastic, fabric or rubber, they are chew-able for some dogs. These toys are not sold as indestructible, so please don’t expect them to be.

If you have a large breed dog that is a chewer, or for that matter a smaller dog that is a power chewer, I would always recommend a strong rope toy, or a rope-and-ball combination.

For example: see my review on Multipet Nuts for Knots Heavy Duty Rope Toy

Some balls are quite durable as well, and perfectly round ones are harder to bite chunks off!

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

This is one of the most popular dog toys and has been around for over 36 years. Made from a natural rubber compound, it is really bouncy and ideal for dogs who like to sink their teeth into things. The hollow center compartment is an ideal place to hide treats, to keep dogs busy!

PROS:

KONG Classic Dog Toy at Play

  • Made in the USA
  • Used worldwide, with endorsements from vets, dog trainers and dog lovers
  • Comes in a range of different sizes, ranging from XS to XXL
  • Hours of fun due to the unpredictable bouncing from the irregular shaping
  • Ideal for inserting treats inside for extra fun and intelligent play
CONS:
  • Whilst there are loads of positive reviews for this product, there are still instances of heavy or power chewers managing to bite the top off. It is made of rubber and is not indestructible – my advice is to buy a size or two sizes larger of you have dogs that are determined to try and destroy their toys!

Here is a helpful sizing chart from KONG – with my advice to “up-size” for very strong chewers:

  • Please watch the toy and discard as soon as it starts to deteriorate – rubber is not good in the digestive tract of a dog.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

A soft and flexible throwing disc. Made from strong, natural rubber it’s a strong toy but has enough give to be safe for most dogs’ gums and teeth.

PROS:

  • Made in the USA
  • Great toy to help keep your dog fit and active
  • Not too hard on teeth and gums
  • Made of strong, durable rubber
CONS:
  • Best for dogs up to 85 lbs
  • There are instances of dogs chewing these in quite short order – as is the case for most of the products I review!
  • Please watch the toy and discard as soon as it starts to deteriorate – rubber is not good in the digestive tract of a dog.

KONG JUMBLER BALL

KONG Jumbler Ball Dog ToySize: Large/Extra Large

My rating: 8.5/10

Price check it at  Amazon

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

A 2-in-1 ball toy, with a tough larger exterior and a smaller tennis ball on the inside, with quite a loud squeaker. It has handles that make gripping and shaking it easy.

PROS:

  • Helps to encourage playing with the inner motion and squeaking
  • Provides great interactive fun
  • The outer handles are a great feature to assist holding on or throwing it
  • There are some really cool colors and other shapes available too
CONS:
  • Once again, there are instances of dogs chewing these – if this happens please take off your dog straight away.

I know Kong toys have always been popular, but I never could quite get our Mini Schnauzer interested in it, even after putting treats or peanut butter inside. He seems to prefer the soft squishy toys, but even those we need to be careful with as he is quite the chewer. Too soft and there is fuzz everywhere. His firehose is one of the longest lasting toys. Overall great info regardless!

      Hi Jennifer,

Your Mini Schnauzer sounds quite the little character! Sometimes dogs just like what they like – and there’s no changing their minds. Thanks for reading and I appreciate you leaving a comment.

Great information. I’m glad you pay attention to safety for animal toys. I know Kong for their cat toys (I have cats, no dogs). I’m convinced my sister will be interested in this page (she has a dog) so I’ll let her know about it. Most Kong animal toys are available here in the Netherlands as well.

I wish such toys had been around when my parents still had dogs. They had to be happy with balls and the occasional pillow they ripped apart (note that those pillows weren’t intended as toys, just ended up as one).

Good luck with your blog. I’m glad to see someone takes her interest in animals so seriously. I may come home with another Kong toy for my cats after the next pet store visit. 🙂

      Hi Paul,

Thank you for your nice comments and I do take safety very seriously. I hear too many stories of emergency vet trips because a dog has ingested some part of a toy, and not all of them have happy endings.

I know about the pillow side of things – I came home to an ankle-deep bed of feathers once!

Thank you for your good wishes – and all the best to you and your cats.
