Elevated Dog Bowls for Large Dogs

An increasing number of dog owners are appreciating the benefits of feeding their large pets from a raised system. It’s one way to help combat bloat, which can be fatal – more common in dogs who gulp their food from floor level, as they tend to take in a lot more air with their food. Aside from that obvious benefit, it’s just plain more comfortable for your dog! So here are the best ones I’ve found on the market.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Very self-explanatory, this is an elevated pet feeding system, with space for two feeding and/or water bowls, housed in a plastic frame. Purchase includes two stainless steel bowls to fit.

FEATURES & BENEFITS?

Plus Points How it benefits your dog
Plastic frame Very easy to wipe down and keep clean
Detachable legs Gives you the choice of using flat on the floor, or providing the necessary height for large dogs.

Also, the legs can be stored conveniently underneath the tray – great for travelling or saving space when not in use.

2 Stainless Steel bowls included 8-inch in diameter and a perfect fit for this feeder, we all like extras with our purchases!

WHAT ELSE IS GOOD ABOUT IT?

  • It’s a great product that is fit for purpose and provides value for money.
  • It’s tried and tested by many people, emphasized by it’s popularity
  • It is genuinely for large dogs – the right size for Huskies, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers

IS THERE ANYTHING NOT SO GOOD?
  • My only complaint with this is it doesn’t have rubber feet, so if you have a smooth-finish floor, you will need to put a mat, or something similar, underneath the legs to stop it travelling around – especially if you have a vigorous eater!

IS THERE ANYTHING NOT SO GOOD?
  • I personally don’t have any complaints, but there seems to be some confusion over sizes. It’s the height that’s important, so you can measure the height from the floor to to base of the neck – i.e. where they bend forward from. You should select a feeder height which is slightly lower than the measurement you’ve just taken. Your dog should have a slight head tilt down to eat or drink. This version is available in 3 heights: 22cm, 30cm, 37cm (the one I’ve featured). Be sure and select the size you want 🙂

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

I really like the design of this one, it’s a little bit more modern looking than the other two above. Believe it or not, the legs are adjustable so the stand can grow with your pet. Stainless steel bowls are removable for ease of cleaning.

The stand is made in the USA from durable BPA-free injection molded plastic

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Plus Points How it benefits your dog
BPA free We love anything that reduces exposure to chemicals for our dogs!
Removable legs

Allows you to adjust the height of the feeder, so you can start smaller and raise it up as your dog grows taller. What a great feature!

2 Stainless Steel bowls included Easily removed for cleaning, and they hold around 11-cups each.

WHAT ELSE IS GOOD ABOUT IT?

  • Very easy to put together – the components just snap into place
  • Some users have been known to take the unit itself apart and put it through the dishwasher to sanitize it!
  • Plastic is good – easy to clean and doesn’t rust.

IS THERE ANYTHING NOT SO GOOD?
  • Some users have struggled a bit with the “snapping into place” of the components. What I would say here is, it may require a bit of force – if it was very easy then the structure wouldn’t be as robust.

For a large dog it’s a long way down to the floor.

I like the term vigorous eater. My dog is a flat out hog and at times I think he may eat the bowl.

Usually in a situation like this most things being equal I will always go for the cheapest one.

Do you think that it’s important for any sized dog to have an elevated bowl just to keep it off the floor?

Or is it just made so a big dog does not have to bend so much? Some nice options here and it’s about time I get my buddy one.

      Hi Barry,

Fair questions, and I would say it is not as necessary for smaller dogs, given they don’t have as far to bend down. However, one exception is if they do gulp their food – if you have one of these “vigorous eaters” then it’s a good idea to prevent gastric bloat. I love that you are so honest about your own dog’s eating habits – our Shepherd was the same – he practically inhaled his food, and it was always gone in a matter of seconds!

All the best to you and your buddy, Mara 🙂

I have seen the elevated feeding bowls before and wondered if they would be beneficial for my dogs. We have two smaller breed dogs. Are the elevated bowls typically meant for larger dogs? Are there health benefits for dogs when they use the elevated bowls, and if so, have you seen information indicating that the elevated bowls could benefit smaller dogs?

      Hi Lisa,

The elevated feeding systems can be used for any dog, and they do come in a range of heights to fit with different breeds. There are definitely health benefits associated with lifting food and water off the ground. Firstly, it makes it easier for the dogs to access, which is a purely mechanical benefit to their neck and spine. Secondly, elevated feeding systems have been shown to reduce occurrences of bloat, a potentially fatal condition that stems from taking in too much air at the time of eating. The reason I have focused on large dogs here, is they are more inclined to gulp their food, taking in great mouthfuls of air at the same time. However, I think it’s a good idea to consider these systems for any dog, as they will give a degree of benefit, whether large or small.

I hope this answers your questions, but if you would like further information, please just get back in touch.

All the best to you and your pooches, Mara 🙂
