WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

An alternative option for exercising your dog, this is similar to a human treadmill but manufactured specifically for dogs. The overhead bar is included as part of the purchase.

There are variable programs for both speed and incline – just like the ones in a real gym!

WHY WOULD YOU NEED IT?

There are many different reasons a dog owner might wish to look into the use of a doggy treadmill. For example,

  • your own health as a dog owner is not what it used to be. As a result you can’t physically get your dog out as much as you would like.
  • your dog has been advised to lose weight by a vet and therefore an increased exercise regime has been suggested
  • you experience very harsh winters where you live, so it is difficult to exercise your dog. Perhaps your pavements are steep and icy for much of the winter, or you want to keep your dog’s paws off the harsh salt and grit used to treat the hard surfaces outside
  • your summer climate is just too darn hot to be outside when it is time to walk the dog. Nobody wants a dog to suffer in the heat, so perhaps an indoor exercise plan is a better option, where it’s shady and air-conditioned.
  • rehabilitation for a dog recovering from injury or illness. Perhaps an outdoor environment is not ideal due to the number of distractions, or other dogs etc.

BENEFITS:

  • 1 year manufacturer’s warranty on the motor
  • Lifetime manufacturer’s warranty on the frame
  • Exercise programs can be customized to suit each individual dog
  • Suitable for smaller living environments
  • Compact, portable folding design
  • Great health benefits for your dog

POTENTIAL ISSUES:

  • Some dogs could take a while to get used to this piece of equipment. However, this can be overcome through the use of treats and/or plenty of praise and encouragement. In most cases the dogs get used to it very quickly and absolutely love it!

However, don’t fret if you are having problems getting to grips with training your dog how to use the treadmill. DogPacer have provided a video from their certified trainer to help you get going.

Conclusion:

All-in-all the DogPacer Treadmill is a great option for exercising your dog if for whatever reason you can’t get out as much as you want or need to. The customer reviews are excellent, with nothing below 4 stars on Amazon at the time this was published.

Yes, it is quite an expensive piece of kit, but it is an investment in your dog’s health. It also takes away some of the stress from dog owners who are worried their dogs might not be getting enough exercise. If that sounds like you, then I would highly recommend this treadmill.

    Hi, Mara.

This is a great post on the “doggie treadmill”. As you mention, there are many times when it’s inconvenient or simply not possible to walk your dog.

Poor health or personal injury are two examples that are very common. All dogs need regular exercise and this is an excellent solution to this problem.

In addition to the above, when conditions are unfavorable outside this becomes a great go-to piece of equipment.

Which dogs are the hardest to train on this machine? Which dogs are the easiest?
Do dogs sometimes prefer the machine to walking outdoors?

    Thanks. Paul

      Hi Paul,

Thanks for providing your thoughts on this, and it’s great you agree these definitely have a place for dog owners with ill-health or injury specifically. I don’t think it’s a case of any breed being easier or harder to train on one of these – I think it will depend on the individual dog and its owner! There are definitely cases however where dogs prefer this method of exercise, particularly where there are very harsh weather conditions. Some dogs I know don’t even want to go outside for the toilet if it’s raining, let alone for a walk. I also think it’s about what a dog gets used to – there is no reason they would feel uncomfortable exercising on this is it’s introduced to them slowly and patiently. Maybe dogs also like it if they see their owners on a treadmill a lot too 🙂 Hope to see you here again, Mara.

This is such a great invention! I was not aware these things were specially made for dogs, I assumed they had to make do with simpler human treadmills!

My Granda could really use one of these. As he has got older and less fit, his dog has started piling on the pounds and she could do with some exercise. I will show him this and he will be delighted.

      Hi Craig,

I’m so glad you think this could be of use. The situation you describe is exactly how I envisage one of these treadmills being used. Thank you for sharing that with me and I hope your Granda finds a good solution.

      All the very best, Mara

HI Mara, I must say I was a little skeptical about a treadmill for dogs when I came across your article here, but after reading and watching the videos I’m thinking this is a great idea. A little pricey but hey when it comes to my pets and their happiness and health, money for the most part is not an issue.
This would be great for those days that the weather just isn’t the greatest for taking a walk outdoors due to being too cold and snowy or too hot for their paws.
Have you tried this out for yourself or know someone that has, and do their pets like being on the treadmill? From the videos I could see some tail wagging, so that is a good sign.

      Hi Kim,

I think it’s entirely natural to feel a bit skeptical about a dog treadmill. For many dog owners it may never be a consideration, but I have seen first hand how they can be used. A friend of mine actually broke her leg in a skiing accident and was unable to get out with her dogs for months. Given her husband worked full time, they had to look for an alternative way of exercising their dogs. Her two Labradors soon took to it and actually love it – in fact they still use it on rainy days even though she is back to normal! Another good option is it’s the dog that is injured or infirm, is a pet stroller. There are some really good strollers on the market now and many dog owners make good use of them.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

      Mara.
