Bike Trailers for Dogs

What could be more fun than being able to take your dog with you , when you want to go out on your bike. Yes, many dogs can run along no problem next to you, but there are some situations when this might not be possible.

If your dog is getting on in years, has an ongoing injury or is recovering from surgery or illness, they still love to get out and about with you! However, they may not be able to keep up with you as well as they usually do, and this is when these bike trailers really come into their own.

Or maybe you have a smaller dog, but you like going for miles on your bike. You want them to come with you, but it’s really a bit far for their little legs. If you have a really small dog, then a dog basket on the handlebars might be even better. If this sounds like a better idea, take a look at the dog baskets here.

Let’s get started – here are my top picks for quality, robust dog trailers.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Of Dutch design, this is a great mode of transport for a dog who isn’t able to run alongside your bike. For example,

  • if your dog is small and can’t run as far as you want to bike
  • if your dog is old, has joint problems or is recovering from an injury

Your dog can still enjoy the great outdoors with you! Available in two different color options, this great trailer has a lowered center of gravity for extra stability

PROS:

  • Very easy towing with an advanced aluminum alloy frame that is incredibly light. (8 lb lighter than most other trailer models for dogs)
  • Added stability for your dog to get in and out, with a kick stand support
  • High visibility with reflector strips on the side and front of the cabin
  • Entry door via the back to make it easier to give your pet water or just to check on them
  • A neat feature is the cushioned headrest at the front
  • Folds away for storage

CONS:

  • If your dog wants to lie down in it, might be too short for larger dogs
  • Some clever dogs have been known to unzip the flaps themselves, but I would say this is rather rare
  • The light-weight nature makes it more suited to roads, pavements and parks – not great for long-distance off-road biking.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

The Aosom bike trailer has a sturdy design, with a steel frame and heavy-duty and polyester fabric that is also water resistant.

This trailer can be set up in minutes, by attaching the bike hitch (included) to your rear wheel axle. The arm of the trailer then slips onto the hitch and is secured using the pin and safety strap.

PROS:

  • Easily set up and folded down again, for efficient storage and carting around
  • Dogs can be easily loaded  – with a choice of entry through the front or back
  • Weather protection with a removable plastic cover – it’s also clear, so your pet has good visibility
  • Mesh zippered front and back door for great air flow and ventilation
  • There is a leash hook inside the trailer, for safely securing your dog
  • Quick release wheels, if you need to take them off

CONS:

  • Whilst this picture shows quite a small dog, this is a relatively heavy trailer weighing 30lbs – some people have been surprised by this, and found it quite cumbersome as a result
  • If your dog is intent on getting out, and is strong, they may tear through the mesh door
