Bike Exercise Leashes for Dogs

To be fair, there aren’t a lot of bike exercise leashes on the market, and certainly not many I would want to use myself. Visions of tangled up bikes, dogs and people spring to mind. So far, I’ve come across this one, which has the extra safety of a rigid bar hooking onto the bike. The dog’s lead still has freedom to move from the anchor point at the other end, but it means you can shorten it to avoid them running into the wheels. If I come across any more that I think are safe, I will add to this page.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

This is the newest Walky Dog Plus model, upgraded in 2015. Constructed from the highest grade of high-carbon steel it is very strong and rust proof. There is a quick release function for safety, which is patented to this particular design and allows you to immediately disconnect your dog from the bike. It has the capacity to lengthen the leash as well, although bear in mind that the longer the leash the more chance there is for your dog to veer too close to your bike wheel or on the other hand, too far away from your bike where you would have less control over them.  A bike leash can be a great way to exercise your dog and may be particularly useful for really active dogs.

PROS:

  • This is the only true and patented design for a quick-release function
  • Has an approved mark for quality and safety-tested (TUV SUD)
  • Can usually be installed on any bike in under 5 minutes – there are no screws and it works on a push-pull locking system
  • The leash is made from military-grade Paracord and has a pull strength of 550 lb – it’s also UV resistant to avoid fading and will not rot/mold
  • You can add an extra 6.5 Inches to the leash length by taking out 2 springs inside the steel wand (BUT take heed of my warning in the above paragraph!)
  • If your dog suddenly changes direction, there is an internal shock-absorbing system which helps prevent you being pulled off your bike

CONS:

  • You do need to have a degree of trust in your dog for any bike leash – they are not suitable accessories if your dog pulls very hard or runs in an erratic fashion
  • Watch the leash where it rubs on the end of the wand, as over time it may wear down and fray with the friction – this is normal with any fabric-to-metal moving contact, so this bike leash shouldn’t be marked down for this reason, as most will have the same component parts

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Effectively, this is a hands-free way of exercising your dog while you on your bike. The rigid pole is what keeps you dog away from the bike wheels, and it’s made of rust-proof stainless steel.

The leash part can also be lengthened, but please remember the longer the lead part, the higher the chance your dog can get closer to your wheel! The lease part can also be used for walking if you so choose.

This can be a great additional exercise routine, particularly for dogs who need more than one or two walks a day.

PROS:

  • Good quality and secure leash system

Poppypet Dog Bicycle Leash Technical Details

  • Most users find this easy to attach and that their dogs have got used to it very quickly

CONS:

  • Not a great idea if your dog is an un-controllable runner. If they tend to be erratic on the lead then I wouldn’t recommend this.
